Record-Breaking Homecoming Traffic Peaks in Indonesia, Authorities Implement Measures

Jakarta – Indonesia experienced its highest-ever peak in homecoming traffic on Friday, March 20, 2026, as millions of Indonesians traveled to celebrate Eid al-Fitr with their families. Authorities report approximately 270,315 vehicles were recorded during the peak flow, prompting the implementation of traffic management techniques to maintain smooth traffic flow.

Traffic Management Strategies

To manage the unprecedented volume of vehicles, several measures were put in place. These included the closure of the MBZ (likely referring to the Jakarta-Cikampek II Elevated Toll Road) due to unspecified conditions, a one-lane contraflow system from kilometer 36 to 47, and a two-lane contraflow system from kilometer 47 to 48. An additional three-lane contraflow was implemented from kilometer 48 to 70. These measures aimed to manage the high traffic volume and ensure smoother passage beyond kilometer 70.

Current Traffic Volume and Predictions

As of 6:00 AM on March 20, 2026, approximately 1.6 million vehicles had departed Jakarta, representing 48% of the predicted 3.5 million vehicles expected to leave the city. The majority of this traffic, 54.6%, was heading towards Trans Java.

Traffic volume decreased slightly on March 19, with 208,825 vehicles leaving Jakarta. Authorities predict the peak return flow will occur around March 24.

Collaboration and Preparedness

The traffic management efforts are a result of collaboration between the National Police’s Traffic Corps (Kakorlantas) and PT Jasa Marga (Persero) Tbk, the state-owned toll road operator. Kakorlantas Inspector General Agus Suryonugroho emphasized the importance of these partnerships in ensuring a safe and smooth homecoming period.[1]

Earlier preparations included an Apel Terpadu Jasa Marga Siaga Operasional Libur Hari Raya Idulftri 1447 H/2026 held on March 10, 2026, at TMII, involving personnel from Korlantas Polri, the Ministry of Transportation, PT Jasa Marga, and PT Jasa Raharja.
