Major Cocaine Bust in the Netherlands: Over 3,200 Kilograms Seized, Eight Arrested
Dutch authorities have intercepted a massive shipment of cocaine, seizing over 3,200 kilograms of the drug in a coordinated operation across multiple locations. Eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the haul, which was discovered in a transit van and a warehouse in the provinces of North Brabant and South Holland.
Discovery and Arrests
The investigation began on Monday when seaport police noticed “suspicious movements” around a warehouse on Nijverheidsstraat in Klundert, according to Omroep Brabant. A large container was driven into the warehouse, and several people were observed entering and exiting the building.
On Thursday evening, police followed a transit van leaving the warehouse and intercepted it in Papendrecht, South Holland. A search of the van revealed a hidden compartment containing 688 kilograms of cocaine and a firearm, as reported by DutchNews.nl.
Suspecting further drugs were hidden in the warehouse, authorities searched the container at the Klundert location. They discovered an additional 2,535 kilograms of cocaine concealed within multiple sealed compartments. In total, over 3,200 kilograms of cocaine were seized.
Eight suspects were arrested during the operation. Two men, aged 45 and 29, were apprehended in connection with the transit van. Three more suspects – aged 44, 46, and 39 – were arrested in Bergen op Zoom. Finally, three additional individuals – aged 43, 31, and 29 – were arrested at the warehouse in Klundert. Omroep Brabant reported that one of the suspects is from Barcelona, while others are from Bilthoven, Dordrecht, Rotterdam, and Bergen op Zoom. Two suspects are without a fixed address.
Authorities Respond
The mayor of Moerdijk, Aart-Jan Moerkerke, ordered the closure of the warehouse on Nijverheidsstraat in Klundert following the discovery. He previously closed another building in Standdaarbuiten late last year, demonstrating a firm stance against drug-related crime. “I am once again shocked by this discovery,” Moerkerke stated, according to TakeToNews. “It shows how persistent drug crime is, but also that our strong approach works.”
The municipality of Moerdijk collaborates with the police, the Public Prosecution Service, and port companies North Sea Port and Port of Moerdijk to combat undermining crime and criminal organizations.
Ongoing Investigation
The seized cocaine has been destroyed, and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are working to determine the origin of the drugs and the extent of the criminal network involved. DutchNews.nl reports that the Public Prosecution Service is leading the investigation.
