337,000-Square-Foot Air Cargo Facility Opens at Milwaukee Mitchell

Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE) officially opened its new 337,000-square-foot air cargo facility on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Developed alongside Crow Holdings at the MKE Regional Business Park, the site occupies the former home of the 440th Airlift Wing and aims to divert freight traffic from congested Illinois airports.

Facility Capacity and Economic Impact

The structure, which entered construction in February 2025, provides enough space to accommodate five Boeing 747-400 cargo planes at once. Airport officials project the facility will generate more than $1.3 million in annual landing fees, supplemented by over $1 million in yearly ground lease rents and fees. Beyond these direct revenues, airport leadership expects the hub to attract new business and support job creation across Wisconsin.

Strategic Role for Wisconsin Logistics

The facility is designed to offer a regional alternative to major hubs in Illinois. By providing a dedicated space for freight, airport officials aim to help businesses mitigate the congestion, delays, and higher costs often associated with shipping through larger neighboring airports.

“Today marks an exciting new chapter for Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport and our entire region,” Airport Director Brian Dranzik said. “What began as a vision to transform underutilized airport property has become a tremendous asset for Wisconsin businesses. This facility positions MKE to play a greater role in the movement of goods while creating new opportunities for economic growth throughout the state.”

Ongoing Infrastructure Developments

The cargo facility opening coincides with broader expansion efforts at the airport. Construction on the new international Terminal E began in September 2025. That project remains active, with an anticipated opening date scheduled for late 2027.
