For years, the automotive industry has anticipated the arrival of solid-state batteries, touting them as the future of electric vehicle (EV) technology. Now, a Finnish startup, Donut Lab, in collaboration with electric motorcycle manufacturer Verge Motorcycles, has achieved a milestone: integrating a solid-state battery into a production vehicle . This growth promises faster charging times, increased safety, and improved longevity compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries.

What are Solid-State Batteries?

Customary lithium-ion batteries utilize a liquid or gel electrolyte to facilitate the movement of ions between the anode and cathode. Solid-state batteries, as the name suggests, replace this liquid or gel with a solid electrolyte. This fundamental shift in design offers several key advantages:

  • Enhanced Safety: The solid electrolyte is non-flammable, significantly reducing the risk of fires and thermal runaway, a concern with lithium-ion batteries.

Donut Lab and Verge Motorcycles Led the Charge

Donut Lab,originally a spin-off from Verge Motorcycles,has successfully developed and produced a solid-state battery for use in Verge’s latest electric motorcycles. According to marko Lehtimäki, CEO of Donut Lab, this marks the first time a solid-state battery has been implemented in a commercially available vehicle. “For the last 15 years, the entire battery industry in automotive has been talking about solid-state batteries-that they’re the future,” Lehtimäki stated. “but up until today, despite all the talk, there’s never been a single production vehicle that uses solid-state batteries.”

Verge Motorcycles is currently shipping motorcycles equipped with the new battery,offering a range of up to 370 miles and the ability to add 186 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging-or as little as 5 minutes with a high-power charger.

Beyond Motorcycles: The Future of EV Batteries

Donut Lab is already in discussions with approximately 100 other electric vehicle companies interested in adopting their solid-state battery technology. The potential impact extends beyond motorcycles,promising to revolutionize the entire EV market. The use of readily available, low-cost materials in Donut Lab’s battery design further enhances its scalability and potential for widespread adoption.

The longevity of the battery is also a important benefit. Lehtimäki notes that the battery is designed to last “multiple lifetimes of a car or motorcycle,” minimizing degradation and preserving resale value.

Challenges and Outlook

While the development is a significant step forward, Donut Lab is still in the process of patenting its technology and has not publicly disclosed the specific chemistry or production methods used. However, the company attributes its success to its agility and innovative approach.

The arrival of commercially available solid-state batteries signals a turning point in EV technology. As the technology matures and production scales up, we can expect to see faster charging times, longer ranges, and increased safety become standard features in electric vehicles, accelerating the transition to a sustainable transportation future.
