He was once the boy every magazine wanted on the cover, a smiling face who invaded American living rooms throughout the 1980s. But behind the fame and the perfect image was a young actor who was quietly struggling with questions of identity, pressure and meaning in his life.

Before he even knew how to drive, he was already working full-time in Hollywood, moving from one hit series to another. The world saw him as a confident young idol. But inside,he was just a kid trying to figure out who he really was.

A childhood on film sets

This adorable former child actor, born in 1974, landed his first role at just eight years old, playing an autistic boy in St. Elsewhere. To help her prepare, her mother explained that autistic children frequently enough live in their own world.

“And I understood that.I would sit there and a whole world would unfold in my head. I followed the patterns on the wall, and in my head an imaginary war raged between the shapes,” he once said.

He also made an appearance in one of the first episodes of Airwolf which earned him a nomination in the “Best Young Actor: Guest in a Series” category.

Soon he was everywhere, starring in family series such as Our House et My Two Dads learning his lines instead of doing math homework, and growing up in the spotlight.

“I was pretending, and I was good at pretending… then all of a sudden people started making a lot of money, and I didn’t want to continue,” he recalled years later.

Lawyers, managers, and executives debated how to “manage” it. But he refused to play the game. The actors of Dr Quinn supported him, and he stayed in this family series, but once it ended, “it was arduous”.

“My father couldn’t look me in the eyes. And it hurt me.Because a boy always wants to be accepted by his father. And I knew I lied to them,” confided the actor.

His mother, not knowing how to react, started crying and said that she always thought he was too cute to not have a girlfriend.

The consequences

The fallout was painful, but something unexpected happened. Letters began pouring in from young gay men across the country, thanking him for daring to come out.

For the first time, he answered her, by hand.

“Actually, all this pressure I was under to identify myself, to define myself, helped me. It meant so much to me to know that I was not alone in this situation. After all, what does it mean [to love men]?

There are so many things associated with it, but at the end of the day, it’s love. I accept it.It doesn’t matter what it looks like,” he explained.

Unfortunately, this revelation had serious consequences for the actor, who was then at the peak of his career.

“I couldn’t audition for a pilot after that,” he said in 2008.
