Payment Terminal Cameras: Data Protection Investigation – Security Risk?

Data Protection Authority Investigates Potential Privacy Breach at Payment Terminals

An inquiry has been launched by the national Data Protection Authority regarding the potential for covert video recording of customers at payment terminals in retail stores and restaurants. The inquiry was prompted by a report from the consumer program ‘WinWin’ on Radio 2, which revealed that some merchants might potentially be capable of recording video footage of customers and their payment cards during transactions without their knowledge.

According to Director Koen Gorissen, the Data Protection Authority will determine whether the use of such cameras constitutes a violation of privacy legislation. The investigation will focus on whether customers are adequately informed about the presence of cameras and the purpose of any recordings being made.

The findings of ‘WinWin’ suggest that the technology exists for retailers to implement video recording systems at point-of-sale terminals. Concerns have been raised about the potential misuse of this technology and the impact on consumer privacy. The Data Protection Authority’s investigation aims to clarify the extent of this practice and ensure compliance with data protection laws.

Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.Consumers with concerns about potential privacy violations are encouraged to contact the Data Protection Authority directly.
