A Vahibé, a Youth Feeling Forgotten

Behind the corrugated iron homes of Vahibé lives a generation many believe authorities have overlooked. This village, part of the commune of Mamoudzou, suffers from a sense of marginalization. The youth of Vahibé feel left behind. Some young peopel remain confined to their homes, while others, left to their own devices, wander the streets and sometimes even instill fear.

“In Vahibé, there aren’t many activities, but on Sundays we go to the plateau to play.Apart from that, there’s nothing to do,” confides Mououmine Hafidhou Houmadi, an 18-year-old from Vahibé.

Vahibé is known as one of the areas most affected by violence in Mayotte. “When children go out to go to school, we are afraid, we don’t even know if they arrived safely,” says a resident, expressing the pervasive anxiety within the community.
