British Independent Film Awards 2025 Winners Announced

“Pillion,” the kinky BDSM rom-com starring alexander Skarsgard and Harry Melling, has won the top honor at the British Independent Film Awards. The debut feature from writer/director Harry Lighton, which premiered at Cannes and is set for U.S. release with A24, also secured the award for best debut screenwriter, adding to its previous wins for best costume design and best make up and hair design.

The awards ceremony, held Sunday at London’s Roundhouse, drew film industry figures from the U.K. and internationally, with presenters including Carey Mulligan, Stephen Merchant, Ruth wilson, Celia Imrie and Billy Crudup.

Akinola Davies Jr.’s “My Father’s Shadow,” also a Cannes debut and produced by Element Picture, won best director despite leading nominations with 11 nods.

Robert Aramayo took home best lead performance for “I Swear,” while Jay Lycurgo was named best supporting performer for “Steve.” Cal McMau won best debut director for “Wasteman,” Dhiraj Mahey was recognized as breakthrough producer for “Ish,” and Posy Sterling claimed the breakthrough performance award for “Lollipop.”
