Formula 1 is poised to introduce a new ‘partial’ aerodynamic mode in 2026, a strategic adjustment designed to mitigate potential safety and technical challenges associated with the upcoming active wing systems, particularly in wet weather conditions. This development arrives as the sport prepares for a important rules revolution, encompassing both all-new power units and radically redesigned cars featuring unprecedented aerodynamic concepts.

As teams delved into simulations of the 2026 regulations, concerns emerged regarding the behavior of the active aerodynamic systems – wings that transition between a low-drag configuration on straights and a high-downforce setup in corners. Originally referred to as ‘X-mode’ and ‘Y-mode,’ and later ‘straightline mode’ and ‘cornering mode,’ these systems will now be collectively known as ‘active aero.’

Two primary complications surfaced concerning the straightline mode. The first revolved around the potential for increased downforce on straights if race control deactivated the mode for safety reasons. This could inadvertently push cars closer to the track surface, increasing the risk of plank wear and potential disqualification. The second issue centered on the performance of cars in straightline mode when grip levels are compromised, such as in damp conditions.

Teams are optimizing their wings to minimize drag in straightline mode, effectively aiming for zero downforce. However, simulations revealed that combining this low-drag setup with reduced grip – particularly on tracks with high-speed kinks like Melbourne – could lead to unpredictable understeer and potentially catastrophic crashes if the wings weren’t in cornering mode.

These challenges necessitated a more nuanced approach to managing active aero in changeable conditions. Following collaborative discussions between teams and the FIA, a solution has been incorporated into the sporting regulations, granting race control greater adaptability to ensure both safety and technical integrity.

the revised system introduces a ‘partially activated’ mode, offering an intermediate configuration where the front wing elements operate in straightline mode (low downforce) while the rear wing flaps remain in cornering mode (high downforce). This allows race control to progressively adjust the level of aerodynamic assistance based on prevailing conditions.

Specifically, if conditions are deemed too hazardous for full straightline mode activation, race control can disable full activation. As conditions improve, they can then authorize partial activation. This will be implemented in conjunction with variable activation zone lengths tailored to specific conditions.

Prior to each race weekend, the FIA will define the track areas where drivers can engage their moveable wings. A longer ‘Activation Zone’ will be designated for full activation, while a shorter zone will be used for partial activation. Such as, the FIA could enable a partial activation zone after high-speed kinks to prevent loss of control in low-grip conditions, while simultaneously ensuring downforce levels remain manageable at the end of subsequent straights.

Red Flag procedure Adjustment for Sprint Weekends

In a related development, the FIA has also approved a modification to the first free practice sessions at sprint weekends.If a red flag interrupts the session within the first 45 minutes,the session may be extended to its full duration of one hour.This adjustment addresses concerns raised by teams regarding insufficient planning time on sprint weekends due to potential session stoppages.

Furthermore, minor adjustments have been made to the rules regarding visibility, allowing for greater flexibility in managing safety car deployments and race starts in conditions of poor visibility.
