Sony ULT FIELD 1 is the smallest member of the speakers ULT Linear Portable Sony family, standing for Ultra Power Sound. It distinguishes itself by offering gadgets that deliver powerful bass without sacrificing sound fidelity. This line extends from portable speakers and headphones to the popular audio towers that have recently gained market dominance, largely replacing customary stereo systems.
We recently had the opportunity to test the ULT FIELD 1, launched last year. It’s a compact speaker with a surprisingly powerful sound that’s sure to turn heads.

Performance
Setting up the ULT FIELD 1 is straightforward. You can choose direct pairing by turning on the speaker and pressing the pairing button, or use Sony’s Music Center request. This app allows you to link speakers, configure the equalizer (prioritizing bass or customizing to your preferences), manage battery life, and monitor battery levels. While instructions suggest complementing the experiance with the Sony Sound Connect application, we where unable to reliably get it to detect the speaker after multiple attempts.
We tested the speaker with various multimedia content, primarily audio streamed through Tidal and YouTube Music. It’s vital to note this device lacks hi-Res certification, suggesting it’s best suited for parties or situations where detailed audio fidelity isn’t paramount.
Playlists featuring techno, reggaeton, and similar genres yielded excellent results.The speaker features a dedicated “ULT” button that significantly boosts the bass. In our opinion,this should be the default bass level.
It’s certainly worth noting the sound is unidirectional. Despite its cylindrical design, audio output is focused on one side, requiring careful placement to ensure optimal coverage of the listening area.
The speaker handled other genres without issue. In enclosed spaces, it performs admirably, and even in outdoor settings like parks or gardens, its performance is more than acceptable, even without maximizing the volume.

Design
The Sony ULT Field 1 boasts a minimalist yet functional design. Its semi-cylindrical shape is complemented by soft rubber covering the side edges, housing the subwoofer tweeters. The remainder of the speaker’s body is wrapped in a fabric mesh, providing a pleasant tactile experience. Controls for power,Bluetooth pairing,volume (+/-),and the ULT button (for subwoofer activation and enhanced bass) are located on the top surface.
A notable feature is the adjustable strap running through both ends of the speaker, enhancing portability and allowing for versatile placement. The USB-C charging port is discreetly located under a cover on the speaker’s rear panel.
Performance & Features
The speaker’s core feature is the ULT system, designed to deliver powerful bass. However, as noted in the original review, disabling the ULT mode significantly reduces bass presence.While the ULT system aims to enhance the low-end, users may find the difference between modes quite stark.
Beyond the ULT system, the speaker offers a straightforward Bluetooth pairing process and a user-friendly interface.Sony doesn’t currently publish detailed specifications like battery life or driver size on their official product page, but independent reviews suggest a solid battery performance for its size.
Conclusion
The Sony ULT Field 1 caters to users prioritizing a portable and powerful musical experience. Its ease of use, combined with its robust design, makes it a suitable companion for various scenarios. the speaker excels when the ULT mode is engaged, delivering the promised enhanced bass.
However, the reliance on the ULT system for a satisfying low-end response is a potential drawback. Users who prefer a more balanced sound profile might find the speaker lacking without the ULT feature activated.
Despite this limitation, the Sony ULT Field 1 remains a compelling option in the portable Bluetooth speaker market.
