Austrian Retail Anticipates growth in Christmas Sales for 2025

As the holiday season approaches, Austrian retail is poised for a positive turn, forecasting an increase in sales for the 2025 Christmas period. Following several years of declining real sales, the sector anticipates an inflation-adjusted rise, signaling renewed consumer confidence and spending.

Recent observations, including a bustling final shopping Saturday, indicate strong consumer interest in gift-giving. Shopping districts and malls across Austria experienced significant foot traffic as individuals finalized thier Christmas purchases.

Preliminary estimates, released in mid-December by the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (Wifo) and the Austrian Trade Association, project Christmas-related additional sales to reach approximately 1.19 billion euros in 2025. This represents a two percent increase compared to the Christmas shopping season of the previous year. The anticipated growth suggests a strengthening economic climate and a willingness among Austrian consumers to invest in festive gifting.
