AFSCME Maryland Council 3 Urges State Investment in Public Services
Annapolis,MD – December 25,2025 – AFSCME Maryland Council 3 today issued a strong call for increased state investment in public services, warning that continued underfunding threatens the ability of Maryland to effectively serve its residents. The union, representing thousands of state employees, held a press conference highlighting the growing strain on public workers and the potential for service disruptions.
Patrick Moran, President of AFSCME Maryland Council 3, emphasized the critical role of a qualified and adequately compensated state workforce. “You can’t continue to run state government without qualified people who are willing to serve and take on difficult work,” Moran stated. “If we do not have the resources to hire and retain people, and state workers are being asked to do even more with less, especially given the current limitations in federal support, state services will inevitably collapse.”
The union’s statement comes amid increasing concerns about the capacity of state agencies to meet the needs of Marylanders. AFSCME Maryland Council 3 argues that sustained investment is essential to ensure the delivery of vital services, including education, healthcare, public safety, and infrastructure maintenance. They advocate for competitive wages, extensive benefits, and sufficient staffing levels to attract and retain a skilled workforce capable of addressing the challenges facing the state.
