Putin Claims US Interested in Zaporizhzhia Nuclear power Plant – But With conditions

according to the Russian publication Kommersant, Kremlin ruler vladimir Putin said that the American side is interested in, or rather, is discussing the possibility of purchasing nuclear fuel for the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). However, this interest is contingent upon the plant being returned to Ukrainian control.

Putin stated that the US has shown interest in procuring uranium enrichment services from Russia for the ZNPP,but only if the plant reverts to Ukrainian ownership. He framed this as a potential benefit for Russia, suggesting continued economic ties even amidst the ongoing conflict.

The ZNPP, currently under Russian occupation since March 2022, has been a source of international concern due to the risk of a nuclear accident. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly called for a safety zone around the plant adn warned of the dangers posed by the ongoing military activity in the area.

Ukraine has consistently demanded the complete demilitarization and return of the ZNPP to its control, accusing Russia of using the plant as a shield and endangering the safety of the region.

Putin’s statement appears to be an attempt to portray Russia as a responsible actor and to leverage the ZNPP situation for potential economic and political gains. Though, the condition attached – the return of the plant to Ukraine – directly contradicts Russia’s current occupation and stated goals in the conflict.
