A series of earthquakes struck western japan on Tuesday, January 6th, causing injuries and prompting concerns across Shimane and Tottori prefectures. The initial quake, registering a magnitude of 6.4, struck at 10:18 a.m.local time, and was followed by several aftershocks [[1]].

Initial Earthquake and Aftershocks

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported the initial earthquake’s epicenter was located in eastern Shimane Prefecture, at a depth of approximately ten kilometers. The quake reached a seismic intensity of 5 on Japan’s scale (equivalent to a strong 6.2 magnitude) in Shimane and Tottori prefectures [[3]]. Two significant aftershocks, measuring magnitudes 5.1 and 5.4, followed shortly after, at 10:28 a.m. and 10:37 a.m. respectively [[1]].

Injuries and Damage Reports

Local media reported several injuries as an inevitable result of the earthquakes. In matsue, Shimane Prefecture, four people were hospitalized after sustaining injuries from falls and other earthquake-related incidents [[1]]. Damage was also reported, including damage to the roofs of several houses. Cracks in roads were reported in Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture. Two people were injured in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture, which is south of the epicenter [[1]].

Long-Period Seismic Motion

The JMA noted the observation of long-period seismic movements, reaching a maximum level of four in western Tottori Prefecture. Long-period seismic motion, characterized by intense, slow, and prolonged seismic waves, can cause substantial swaying in high-rise buildings, particularly on upper floors [[1]]. This type of motion poses a specific risk to structures and requires careful monitoring.

Tsunami Warning and Updates

Authorities have confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued following the earthquakes [[2]]. The JMA initially reported the magnitude as 6.2 before revising it upwards to 6.4.
