Testimony reveals Restraint Methods Used on Boys in Adoption Case
Becky Hamber, during her ongoing testimony, detailed the methods she and her wife, Brandy Cooney, employed to manage the behavior of the boys they intended to adopt. Questioned by her attorney, Monte MacGregor, Hamber addressed practices including the use of locks on bedroom doors, zip-ties, and wetsuits, offering justifications for each.
Hamber explained that restraints, such as zip-tying hockey helmets, were utilized to prevent the children from self-harm, specifically head-banging. She further stated her decision to have the boys wear wetsuits, a point previously raised during the trial, was motivated by a desire to prevent accidents within the home and protect the children’s bodies. Hamber described the wetsuits as providing a feeling of security, comparing them to “a hug.”
A notable aspect of Hamber’s testimony centered on the assertion that children’s aid workers and healthcare professionals were aware of these techniques and did not express concerns. She also emphasized her continued affection for the boys, despite the challenges encountered.
This testimony is part of a five-month trial concerning the 2022 death of L.L., who was discovered unresponsive in his bedroom, and allegations of assault against his brother. Hamber’s testimony,which commenced yesterday,is scheduled to continue on Wednesday,with ongoing live coverage planned.
