David Bowie‘s Childhood Home to Become Public Heritage Site
David Bowie’s childhood home in Brixton,South London,is set to open to the public as a heritage site by the end of 2027. The project aims to celebrate Bowie’s early life and inspire future generations of creatives.
The house, located at 43 Stansfield Road, was home to Bowie and his family from 1969 to 1973, a formative period during which he developed his musical identity.Bowie himself described the intense focus of his youth, stating, “I spent so much time in my bedroom. It really was my entire world.I had books up there, my music up there, my record player. Going from my world upstairs out onto the street, I had to pass through this no-man’s-land of the living room.”
The Heritage of London Trust is leading the project, working in collaboration with the David Bowie Estate. Nicola Stacey, director of the Heritage of London Trust, emphasized Bowie’s connection to London: “david Bowie was a proud Londoner. Even though his career took him all over the world, he always remembered where he came from and the community that supported him as he grew up.”
The site will not present Bowie’s youth as mere nostalgia, but as a source of inspiration. Organizers intend for the space to allow young people to “see themselves reflected in someone who dared to think differently.” The project will be developed alongside the Trust’s Proud Places program, furthering Bowie’s commitment to the creative arts.
The initiative received a £10,000 grant from Southwark Council in January 2024 to help with initial feasibility studies. Further funding is being sought to fully realize the project.
the house was purchased by the Heritage of London Trust in January 2024, with the support of a ample donation from Bowie’s estate. The building had fallen into disrepair and was at risk of redevelopment.
