The iconic Dutch rock band Golden Earring is receiving a special tribute this week with a series of farewell concerts at Rotterdam Ahoy, coupled with a dedicated radio program on NPO Radio 2. These events mark a poignant goodbye too the band, especially following the passing of guitarist and vocalist George Kooymans last year.
The concert series, titled “Golden Earring – One Last Night,” features performances by Barry hay, Cesar Zuiderwijk, and Rinus Gerritsen. Listeners can participate by requesting their favorite Golden Earring songs via the NPO Listening app, perhaps hearing them played during the concerts or on the radio tribute.
NPO Radio 2 will broadcast the final hour of each concert live from 9:30 PM to 10:30 PM in a special program called “Golden Earring Thanks.” Hosted by Tim Op het Broek, the program will begin at 8:00 PM and will feature a extensive look back at the band’s illustrious career. “Golden Earring Thanks” promises a rich tapestry of content, including listener memories, anecdotes from NPO Radio 2 DJs, interviews with guest artists performing at the concerts, and exclusive insights from Golden Earring themselves.
Over six decades, Golden Earring ascended to international acclaim, delivering timeless hits like “Radar Love” and “Twilight Zone” and captivating audiences with their energetic live shows. The Ahoy concerts serve as a fitting homage to their enduring musical contributions and a heartfelt tribute to the memory of George Kooymans.
The band’s continued popularity was recently underscored by the NPO Radio 2 top 2000, where the number of Golden Earring songs included in the annual list increased from twelve to sixteen. Notably,”radar Love” re-entered the Top 10 for the second time,demonstrating the song’s lasting appeal and the band’s enduring legacy within Dutch music culture.
