Bonobo Demonstrates Imagination,Challenging Human-Exclusive Trait
Recent research published in Science suggests the capacity for imagination,long considered uniquely human,may extend to other primates. A bonobo named Kanzi, who lived at the Ape Initiative in Des Moines, Iowa, and passed away last year at age 44, participated in experiments demonstrating an ability to engage in “pretend” play – specifically, a tea party.
Researchers investigated whether Kanzi’s advanced dialog skills, including understanding approximately 100 English words and utilizing symbolic depiction, where linked to “secondary symbolization.” This cognitive ability allows individuals to imagine alternate realities and share those illusions with others. The study provides evidence that Kanzi could participate in the staging of a tea party, indicating a capacity for imagination comparable to that of young children.This finding challenges the previous assumption that imaginative play was exclusive to humans.
