The European Union has officially launched NanoIC, a state-of-the-art semiconductor pilot line representing a significant €700 million investment under the european Chips Act. This initiative is designed to propel the advancement of advanced chip technologies and reinforce Europe’s competitive standing in the global semiconductor industry.
Located at the renowned imec research hub in Leuven, Belgium, NanoIC operates as an open innovation platform. This unique model provides companies, research institutions, and startups with the resources to prototype and rigorously test next-generation components before scaling to full commercial production. The open access approach distinguishes NanoIC from conventional, closed-access fabrication facilities (fabs).
A key differentiator of NanoIC is its capability to support the development of system-on-chip (SoC) technologies extending beyond the 2-nanometer scale. It offers access to early-stage process design kits (pdks) and a comprehensive suite of advanced toolsets, effectively bridging the critical gap between fundamental laboratory research and industrial submission. This capability is crucial for accelerating innovation in areas like artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and advanced connectivity.
The European Chips Act aims to mobilize at least €15 billion of public and private investments to triple Europe’s share of global semiconductor production to 20% by 2030. NanoIC is a cornerstone of this aspiring plan, fostering collaboration and reducing reliance on non-European semiconductor suppliers. The facility will play a vital role in enabling European companies to design and produce cutting-edge chips,securing the continent’s technological sovereignty.
