The chip and sensor manufacturer ams-Osram, based in Premstätten near Graz, cannot escape the problem area. In the previous year, annual sales fell by 129 million euros. The group wants to cut a total of 2,000 jobs in Europe and Asia.

Ams-Osram has been struggling with poor sales figures and growing debts for some time. More on this in Ams-Osram: Supervisory Board met to take measures (January 21, 2026). As the business newspaper “Manager Magazin” reported on Tuesday, sales fell by three percent to 3.32 billion euros last year, mainly due to the weak dollar. However, the chip core business increased by seven percent, the article said.

Ten percent of the workforce affected?

The bottom line, however, was a loss of 129 million euros, significantly less than the previous year, when there was a loss of 785 million euros. In the fourth quarter of 2025, sales of 874 million euros were even at the upper end of expectations. The industry magazine reported on Tuesday that ams-Osram still has to make further savings and wants to cut 1,000 jobs in Europe and another 1,000 jobs in Asia over the next three years.

This corresponds to around ten percent of the entire workforce. Austria is not affected by the job cuts, a spokesman emphasized to the Austria Press Agency on Tuesday. With a new savings program, the group wants to reduce costs by a further 200 million euros by 2028, CEO Aldo Kamper is quoted as saying.

With this – and with the sale of part of the sensor business to Infineon announced last week – “we are sharpening our competitiveness and regaining the financial flexibility to invest specifically in our growth,” Aldo Kamper told “Manager Magazin” on Tuesday.

Expectations for the current year subdued

CEO Kamper viewed the previous restructuring program “Reestablish the Base” as successful. The targeted annual savings of 220 million euros were achieved a year earlier than planned. With the new “Simplify” savings program, the group now wants to focus on its future as a “Digital Photonics Powerhouse”.

Management is dampening expectations for the first quarter of this year. Due to seasonal effects and the sale of parts of the company, sales are expected to decline to between 710 and 810 million euros. In the medium term, ams-Osram is targeting single-digit growth and margins of more than 25 percent in the semiconductor business.
