Meanwhile, 881 cases involved shifts from male to female. An additional 801 modifications accounted for alternative combinations, which included transitions to entries such as “diverse” or leaving the field blank. This distribution reflects a broader nationwide pattern where female-to-male updates constitute the largest single category of administrative filings.
Despite the release of raw totals, detailed demographic insights into the applicants remain limited. According to the Federal Statistical Office, local registration offices do not collect or publish data detailing the age or nationality of individuals filing declarations under the law. Furthermore, official statistics do not track the precise volume of individuals who also chose to update their given names alongside their gender marker, nor do current datasets permit a reliable comparison between urban adoption rates in major cities and rural districts.
National Implementation and Legislative Context
The Self-Determination Act triggered an immediate surge in filings nationwide when it took effect on November 1, 2024, replacing the legacy Transsexuals Act. Federal figures indicate that while only 596 applications were processed across Germany under the previous legal framework between January and October 2024, November alone saw 7,057 filings. Preliminary figures for 2026 show continued demand, with the Federal Statistical Office recording 2,646 modifications during the first four months of the year, averaging between 559 and 747 monthly updates.
Statistical experts note that published tallies likely understate the total volume of declarations nationwide. Because official registries only count individuals possessing an entry in the German birth register, people born abroad or without a domestic birth registration entry are excluded from the official count.
