High school girls wrestling has grown quickly over the last few years in Iowa. The latest addition to the sanctioned sport will be a state dual team tournament. Officials with the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced the move Monday. The first girls state duals will be on Friday, Jan. 22, 2027, at Xtream Arena in Coralville.“There is no better place to host our State Dual Meet Tournament than WrestleTown USA,” IGHSAU Executive Director Erin Gerlich said in a news release. “Coralville and Iowa City are the premier hub for wrestling in Iowa, and we are thrilled to extend the strong relationship we’ve built with Xtream Arena and great people at The Iowa City Area Sports Commission. As the host of our state volleyball and wrestling championships, this is a natural fit for the continued growth of girls wrestling.”Xtream Arena hosted the Iowa boys state dual tournament Saturday, Feb. 7. Don Bosco beat Jesup in the Class 1A duals championship round, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont beat Decorah in 2A and Southeast Polk beat Indianola in 3A.”We are honored to host the inaugural girls state dual tournament and continue our collective efforts to grow the sport,” Josh Schamberger, president of Think Iowa City and the Iowa City Area Sports Commission, said in the news release. “Our community values its important role to create another atmosphere and experience for the Iowa Girl that will be remembered for a lifetime.
