The meeting was particularly anticipated. It was ultimately ASSE which won against Montpellier on Saturday evening (1-0). A victory which brings smiles back to the people of Saint-Etienne and which makes the MHSC cringe.
If ASSE revived by winning against Montpellier, the MHSC could have drawn a line under its hopes of an immediate return to Ligue 1. Bertrand Quenette, Geoffray Dernis (ex-ASSE, Ex-MHSC) and Benjamin Psaume (ex-MHSC) returned to the meeting in the show Montpellier Sport Club.
Benjamin Psalm (ex-MHSC): “I’m not going to lie to you, this week is a real headache after an elimination in Nice and a defeat on the ASSE pitch. I didn’t only see the negative. But we have deficiencies and flaws. We are in our match but we are punished for careless errors. You come away with a defeat which really hurts Saint-Etienne.“
Geoffray Dernis (ex-ASSE, Ex-MHSC) : “Whatever the content, you have two matches and two losses. It hurts in the head and in the legs. […] You took a slap in the face in Nice. And a second in Saint-Etienne. I have the impression that the end of the match is complicated for Montpellier.“
Benjamin Psalm (ex-MHSC): “The cover of Julien Le Cardinal? You have no right to leave him alone. It’s a zone story. Everyone fell on Fayad, but what is not normal is that there is no one at the far post. A recovery from a corner should not happen.“
Geoffray Dernis (ex-ASSE, Ex-MHSC) : “There was this corner but I felt that the Stéphanois were gaining the upper hand. Montpellier was in difficulty every time ASSE pressed the accelerator. At 0-0 given the match you are happy with a draw. We scuttled the match. I would have preferred that the MHSC took a well-constructed goal. We would have said well done. But now, you don’t have the right to sabotage yourself like that. And behind, you don’t have the answer to get a draw.”
