Instant Insurance & MOT Checks: Prices & Benefits

All it takes is a handful of seconds to find out who is driving without insurance or with an expired inspection. It is the new technological weapon supplied to the local police of Rome Capital, operational since the end of January and already the protagonist of a barrage of checks that has brought out an alarming fact: in the Capital, one motorist in twenty travels illegally, without insurance coverage or without having carried out the mandatory periodic checks.

Technology at the service of controls

The new Velox 106 SE devicesconnected in real time to the Civil Motorization database, represent a qualitative leap in road surveillance activity.

Through a tablet of the latest generation, agents can instantly verify the regularity of cars and motorbikes in transit, cross-referencing the license plate data with the national archives.

The system works with a pincer strategy: a first patrol focuses on incoming vehicles, the software automatically analyzes the information and, in case of irregularities, sends the alert to a second unit positioned about sixty meters ahead, which stops the vehicle.

The numbers of the operation

The first two weeks of experimentation they affected strategic areas of the city: Eur, Ostiense, the Tintoretto area and Via del Mare.

Out of approximately a thousand vehicles screened, the balance sheet is clear: one hundred irregularities in total, ranging from expired licenses to failure to use seat belts.

But the most significant data concerns serious violations: fifty motorists – 5% of the total – were caught driving without insurance or with an inspection not in order.

For those who are stopped, the consequences are serious. Driving without RCA coverage entails a fine ranging between 866 and 3,464 euros, in addition to the immediate seizure of the vehicle and the deduction of points from the driving licence.

However, those who have neglected the periodic inspection risk fines ranging from 173 to 694 euros and suspension from circulation until the technical inspection is carried out. In both cases, the tow truck snaps.

The extension of controls

At the moment, the devices operate only during day shiftsbut from the headquarters in via della Consolazione they let it be known that the activity will soon also be extended to the night hours and progressively to all quadrants of the capital. An intensification that will inevitably lead to an increase in sanctions.

On the other hand, local police numbers in 2025 they speak of an already growing trend: around two million high fines, with an increase of almost 10% compared to the previous year.

Of these, over a million were contested directly by patrols in the area, while the remainder came from remote detection systems such as photored and electronic gates of the limited traffic areas and preferential lanes.

The deterrent effect

One fact, however, makes us reflect: where fixed speed cameras, mobile speed cameras and tutor systems have been installed, infringements have dropped significantly.

A signal that technology, if used in a widespread and constant way, can have an important deterrent effect on irregular traffic.
