NECEDAH TOWNSHIP, Wis. (WKOW) — An Oregon man has been found guilty after pleading no contest to charges related to the shooting death of his friend.
Jeffrey Crompton pleaded no contest to second-degree intentional homicide.
He’s set to be sentenced in April.
The Juneau County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call on May 10, 2024, about a man not breathing on 11th Avenue in Necedah Township. Both Crompton and the victim, Daniel Asmussen, owned properties there.
When deputies and Mauston Area Ambulance personnel arrived, they found Asmussen deceased.
The criminal complaint says investigators believe Asmussen died more than 12 hours before deputies arrived. An autopsy revealed a gunshot wound to his upper abdominal area.
Investigators recovered a gold-colored bullet from Asmussen’s body. A bullet from Crompton’s 9mm pistol was found to match the one recovered from Asmussen’s body, according to the complaint.
The complaint also stated that Crompton deleted video footage from Spypoint cellular cameras on his property, which would have shown his movements around the time of Asmussen’s death.
Crompton told detectives that he and Asmussen had been friends for several years but had a falling out in February 2024. Crompton said that Asmussen left him stranded at Sportsman’s Bar after an argument, forcing Crompton to walk about six miles home.
