Kate Middleton’s Efforts to Connect with Meghan Markle Were Unreciprocated

Princess Catherine reportedly attempted to foster a relationship with Meghan Markle upon her entry into the royal family, but these efforts were not met with a response, according to a new book about the Prince and Princess of Wales.

From ‘Fab Four’ to Rift

The dynamic between Prince William, Princess Catherine, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle initially presented a united front, earning them the nickname “Fab Four” following Harry and Meghan’s 2018 wedding. Still, tensions began to surface, culminating in the Sussexes’ departure from royal duties in 2020.

Throughout this period, Harry and Meghan have publicly shared accusations concerning the Prince and Princess of Wales, including allegations surrounding a disagreement over Meghan’s wedding preparations and Prince William’s initial reservations about his relationship with Meghan. The Prince and Princess of Wales have not publicly addressed these claims.

Catherine’s Attempts at Connection

Russell Myers, in his new book about the Prince and Princess of Wales, details Catherine’s willingness to connect with Meghan. Myers notes the significant differences in their backgrounds and lifestyles – Meghan having established a successful career while Catherine’s primary role was as a member of the royal family. Despite these differences, Catherine reportedly attempted to give Meghan a chance.

The book also reveals that both Catherine and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, extended assistance to Meghan as she adjusted to royal life, but their “repeated attempts” were not acknowledged.

A History of Warmth and Subsequent Tension

In 2017, prior to her wedding, Meghan Markle described Princess Kate as “wonderful” during a BBC interview, suggesting a positive initial relationship. However, this sentiment appears to have shifted following reported incidents and the couple’s departure from royal duties.

During a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan addressed reports that she had made Princess Kate cry before the wedding, stating that the opposite had occurred and that Kate later apologized. She acknowledged that this incident contributed to a change in public perception.
