Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong surprised fans in his hometown of Rodeo, California, on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026, by headlining a free, open-air concert and bringing Ramones bassist C.J. Ramone onstage for a collaborative set. The unannounced appearance took place at Lefty Gomez Field during the Rodeo Music and Art Market, drawing thousands of attendees to the unincorporated Contra Costa town.
Surprise Guest C.J. Ramone Joins the Coverups
Armstrong performed alongside his side project, the Coverups, delivering a two-hour set of rock classics under the afternoon sun. Midway through the performance, Armstrong welcomed C.J. Ramone to the stage.
Formed in 2018, the Coverups feature Armstrong alongside members of the Green Day touring and recording crew, including bassist Mike Dirnt, touring guitarist Jason White, tour manager Bill Schneider, and engineer Chris Dugan. The festival setlist also included covers of Tommy James & the Shondells’ “I Think We’re Alone Now,” Bryan Adams’ “Summer of ‘69,” and the Clash’s “Should I Stay Or Should I Go.”
A Hometown Homecoming at Lefty Gomez Field
The daytime event transformed Lefty Gomez Field—a venue Armstrong noted he frequented as a child while attempting to play baseball—into a massive punk rock gathering. “I’ve never seen so many people in Rodeo at one time in my life,” Armstrong told the crowd, pointing out his 94-year-old mother, Ollie Armstrong, in the audience. “That’s the queen of Rodeo over there.”
Family members, including Armstrong’s sister Anna—who co-organized the event—and his aunt Judy Armstrong, were also in attendance. The free festival ran from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., featuring local food and artisan vendors, a children’s play area with inflatable attractions, and opening sets from Oakland acts Whateverglades, the Black Excellence Band, and DJ Cavity Rock.
Dedicated Fans Travel International Distances
The localized community market attracted international travelers, including 39-year-old Sarah Drace from England. Drace and three friends landed in the Bay Area on Friday, Sept. 25, and arrived at the barricades at Lefty Gomez Field by 4:30 a.m.
Strict venue policies prohibited pets, outside alcohol, smoking, chairs, ice chests, and backpacks. Security and organizers managed the massive influx of visitors as Armstrong greeted fans and walked through the vendor rows prior to taking the stage.
