Epic Games Acquires AI-Powered Digital Human Tech Firm Meshcapade, Expanding into Tübingen’s “Cyber Valley”

Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite and the Unreal Engine, has acquired Meshcapade, a German startup specializing in AI-driven digital human technology. The deal, announced on February 18, 2026, aims to enhance Epic’s MetaHuman capabilities and expand its presence in the European AI research hub known as “Cyber Valley” in Tübingen, Germany. The purchase price was not disclosed.

AI-Powered Animation Technology

Meshcapade, a spin-off from the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, has developed technology that uses artificial intelligence to generate 3D motion and body shape data from standard video footage. This offers an alternative to expensive motion capture setups, making the creation of realistic digital humans more accessible to game developers, filmmakers, and other creatives. The technology transforms video recordings – capturing subtle gestures and dynamic movements – into high-fidelity 3D data for integration into creative projects. Epic Games states this will bolster MetaHuman and Unreal Engine.

Expanding Epic’s Digital Human Capabilities

This acquisition builds upon Epic’s existing operate with MetaHuman, a framework for generating hyper-realistic digital characters within the Unreal Engine. Meshcapade’s technology is designed to complement MetaHuman by providing a more efficient and cost-effective way to create 3D data for digital humans. According to Meshcapade co-founder Naureen Mahmood, the company’s goal was to make “developing digital humans easier, more expressive, and more accessible for creators.”

Establishing a Presence in “Cyber Valley”

Alongside the acquisition, Epic Games is establishing a novel office in Tübingen’s “Cyber Valley,” a region known for its concentration of AI research, and development. This move demonstrates Epic’s commitment to investing in AI technology and collaborating with leading research institutions.

Strategic Alignment

Vladimir Mastilovi, Epic’s Vice President of digital humans technology, stated that Epic believes Meshcapade’s “long-term research and development strategy” complements the company’s “existing goals and ideas.”

About Meshcapade

Founded in 2018 as a spin-off of the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, Meshcapade’s core business is creating animations based on video recordings. The company’s technology was developed by Naureen Mahmood, Talha Zaman, and Michael J. Black.
