Guangdong’s Digital Trade Surges, Reaching $104.28 Billion in 2025

Guangdong province is experiencing significant growth in its digital trade sector, with a projected volume of $104.28 billion in 2025. This represents a 9.2% increase year-on-year and accounts for 27.3% of the national total, according to the Guangdong Provincial Department of Commerce.

Growth During the 14th Five-Year Plan

Throughout the “14th Five-Year Plan” period (2021-2025), Guangdong’s digital trade has steadily increased from $81.23 billion to the anticipated $104.28 billion, demonstrating an average annual growth rate of 9.5%.

Key Areas of Growth

Guangdong has focused on promoting the export of digital content, including animation, games, and online dramas. The province has similarly prioritized cultivating leading enterprises and intellectual property (IP). Dongguan, in particular, has emerged as a hub for trendy IP, earning the title of “Chinese Fashion Capital” and manufacturing over a quarter of the world’s animation derivatives.

Gaming Industry Expansion

Leading gaming companies based in Guangdong, including Tencent, NetEase, and Sanqi Interactive Entertainment, are driving overseas revenue. Gaming revenue from overseas markets is projected to exceed 46 billion yuan in 2025, marking a year-on-year increase of over 9%.

Digital Service Trade Development

Guangdong is also expanding its digital service trade, with a focus on high-end service outsourcing. The province anticipates a service outsourcing execution amount of $44.9 billion in 2025, a 13.5% increase year-on-year. This expansion will extend to 165 countries and regions worldwide.

Infrastructure and Innovation

Guangdong has established the National Digital Service Export Base in Guangzhou’s Tianhe Central Business District, along with seven provincial digital service export bases, including those in Guangzhou Development Zone, Guangzhou Pazhou, and Dongguan Songshan Lake. These initiatives aim to enhance innovation capabilities in areas like cloud computing, communication, and technical services.

High-Value Added Businesses

In 2025, Guangdong expects rapid growth in AI technology development, network & data security engineering technical services, and internet marketing and promotion, with projected year-on-year growth rates of 192.6%, 150.0%, 41.3%, and 26.4%, respectively.

Integration of Digital Trade with Manufacturing

Guangdong is actively integrating digital trade with its manufacturing sector, industrial chains, and traditional goods trade. Digital service platforms are providing comprehensive information services – from production to sales – for industrial clusters specializing in textiles, apparel, agricultural products, luggage, leather goods, and toys.
