Qualcomm Leads Industry Push for 6G, Targeting 2029 Commercialization

At Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2026, Qualcomm announced a new strategic coalition with leading industry partners to accelerate the development and global deployment of 6G technology, with commercial systems anticipated to launch starting in 2029. Qualcomm revealed a milestone-driven roadmap focused on delivering AI-native 6G networks.

Beyond Speed: The AI-Native 6G Vision

Unlike 5G, which largely focused on increased bandwidth, 6G is being designed as an AI-native system. This means artificial intelligence will be deeply integrated into the network itself, aiming for more efficient network traffic management and advanced capabilities. This shift represents a move towards a “smarter” network, capable of optimizing performance and adapting to changing demands.

Key Pillars of 6G Technology

The development of 6G is built upon three key pillars: connectivity, wide-area sensing, and high-performance compute. These networks will feature:

  • Intelligent radios with integrated wide-area sensing capabilities
  • Virtualized and cloud RAN with high-performance and energy-efficient compute
  • AI-based network autonomy
  • Edge and centralized data centers for new AI workloads

Early 6G tests are expected to begin in 2028, with initial commercialization targeted for 2029. Some early tests in China have already indicated potential speeds of around 280 Gbps.

Qualcomm’s X105 Modem-RF

Qualcomm unveiled its X105 Modem-RF, designed to deliver “unmatched upload and download speeds” and support the demands of “personal AI devices.” This modem will serve as a foundation for future 6G testing and development.
