The meta-analysis, which reviewed studies from Asia, Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Brazil, found that a diet rich in whole grains reduced average body weight and waist circumference. Participants also experienced improvements in blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar levels, alongside a decrease in the inflammation marker interleukin-6, according to the published data. Even lower amounts ranging from 30 to 40 grams per day showed positive associations with health metrics, though the most distinct effects appeared at the 60 to 100-gram daily threshold.
Researchers outlined typical examples for reaching four to six daily portions, which include a bowl of oatmeal, a sandwich made with whole-grain bread, and a serving of brown rice. Furthermore, the analyzed trials lasted an average of approximately eight weeks, leaving long-term sustainability unconfirmed. Because very high daily quantities were rarely examined, researchers stated that current guidelines do not require radical overhauls, but rather a shift toward choosing whole grains over refined alternatives.
