MediaTek and Starlink Bring Emergency Satellite Alerts to Mobile Devices
Barcelona, Spain – March 6, 2026 – MediaTek, a leading fabless semiconductor company, is collaborating with Starlink to deliver wireless emergency alerts via satellite communication, demonstrated at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026. This partnership aims to provide critical communication during natural disasters and other life-threatening situations, even when cellular coverage is unavailable.
Expanding Emergency Communication Access
The collaboration leverages MediaTek’s expertise in satellite technology and Starlink’s satellite network to expand access to life-saving alerts. The system supports alerts from the Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS), Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) framework, and the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning System (ETWS). Currently, WEA services are available in the United States, Canada, and Japan, with over 4.4 million people having already connected to Starlink Mobile during emergencies [1].
Direct-to-Cell Technology and the M90 Modem
MediaTek is showcasing the Starlink Mobile service on a device powered by the MediaTek M90, the world’s first 5G modem with integrated satellite technology [1]. This “Direct to Cell” technology utilizes the S-Band to ensure consumers can receive emergency information on their mobile devices, regardless of location. The technology is a step towards the commercial deployment of standardized 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NR-NTN) technology [4].
Beyond Emergency Alerts: AI Glasses and Extreme Zoom
At MWC 2026, MediaTek also unveiled latest advancements in other areas. The company showcased AI-powered smart glasses with integrated Starlink emergency alert functionality [2], as well as AI privacy glasses and extreme zoom technology [3].
