Avalanche Bolsters Championship Contender with Key Trades, Maple Leafs Eye Future

The Colorado Avalanche strengthened their position as a top Stanley Cup contender with a flurry of trades leading up to the NHL trade deadline, acquiring forward Nicolas Roy from the Toronto Maple Leafs and defenseman Nick Blankenburg from the Nashville Predators. Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs signaled a shift towards rebuilding, shedding assets for future draft capital.

Avalanche Add Depth and Versatility

On Thursday, the Avalanche acquired Nicolas Roy, a 29-year-traditional forward, from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a conditional first-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft and a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. NHL.com reports that if Colorado’s first-round pick in 2027 falls within the top 10, the Maple Leafs will receive an unprotected first-round pick in 2028 instead.

Avalanche General Manager Chris MacFarland highlighted Roy’s versatility, stating he can play both center and wing, providing coach Jared Bednar with valuable lineup flexibility. NHL.com quoted MacFarland, “You just can’t have enough centermen and defensemen as well.”

Roy has 20 points (five goals, 15 assists) in 59 games this season and is under contract for one more year at a $3 million average annual value. He previously won the Stanley Cup with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023.

Colorado as well added defenseman Nick Blankenburg from the Nashville Predators on Wednesday, trading a fifth-round pick in the 2027 draft for his services.

Maple Leafs Begin Rebuild, Acquire Draft Picks

The Maple Leafs’ acquisition of Roy came after a trade with the Vegas Golden Knights last June, where they sent forward Mitch Marner to the Golden Knights. ESPN notes that the asking price for Roy reflected a slow trade market for forwards.

Toronto coach Craig Berube acknowledged the impact of the trade on the team, stating, “It’s a tight-knit group in there. They won’t be happy about it.” NHL.com reported this comment, indicating the team’s emotional response to losing a player.

The Maple Leafs, currently seventh in the Atlantic Division, appear to be prioritizing the acquisition of draft picks to rebuild for the future.

Other Moves Around the League

The Calgary Flames also made a move, acquiring forward Ryan Strome from the Anaheim Ducks for a seventh-round pick in the 2027 draft. NHL.com reports that Strome, 32, has nine points (three goals, six assists) in 33 games this season and is in the final year of his five-year contract.

Calgary also acquired forward Brennan Othmann from the New York Rangers in exchange for forward prospect Jacob Battaglia.
