Mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, chikungunya, and Zika are increasing in prevalence globally, driven by factors such as urbanization, increased international travel, and climate change. These viruses, transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus), pose a significant and escalating threat to public health. Zika virus infection, transmitted by the same Aedes mosquitoes, can cause a range of symptoms, often milder than dengue or chikungunya. These include fever, rash, joint pain, conjunctivitis (red eyes), and muscle pain . However, Zika gained significant attention due to its association with birth defects, particularly microcephaly, in infants born to infected mothers .

Global Distribution and Overlap

The geographical distribution of these diseases is increasingly overlapping, with a convergence in suitability for transmission around the globe . Recent spread of chikungunya and Zika closely aligns with areas already suitable for dengue transmission . An estimated 5.66 billion people live in areas suitable for dengue, chikungunya, and Zika, while 1.54 billion are at risk for yellow fever .

Challenges in Surveillance and Diagnosis

Effective control of these diseases is hampered by several factors, including surveillance biases and differences in diagnostic capabilities. Higher-income countries with better healthcare infrastructure are more likely to detect and report cases, potentially leading to an overestimation of risk in those regions .

Future Directions and Public Health Tools

Ongoing research and development efforts are focused on improving surveillance, diagnostics, and prevention strategies. A new generation of vaccines and public health tools are crucial to staying ahead of the threat posed by these expanding mosquito-borne illnesses.
