AI, Journalism, and the Future of Information: A Sanremo Discussion
Sanremo, Italy is set to host a critical discussion on the intersection of artificial intelligence and the media landscape. A round table event, part of the “Literary Tuesdays” series at the Casinò Sanremo, will explore the evolving role of AI in information dissemination and its societal impact. The event, scheduled for Thursday, March 12th, will feature prominent figures from journalism, law, and academia.
Key Participants and the Focus of the Debate
The discussion will bring together Michele Brambilla, Director of “Il Secolo XIX”; Claudio Scajola, President of the Province of Imperia and Mayor of the city; and Ruben Razzante, Professor of Information Law at the Catholic University of Milan. The event will center around the presentation of Ruben Razzante’s book, “The Algorithm of Equality” (Franco Angeli editore).
“The Algorithm of Equality”: Navigating a Polarized Debate
Razzante’s book delves into the increasingly polarized debate surrounding AI – often framed as either apocalyptic or wholly beneficial. It argues for a more nuanced understanding of the digital transformation impacting individuals, businesses, and institutions. The core message emphasizes the necessitate to guide AI development towards prioritizing human well-being and upholding the value of equality in all its forms.
Journalistic Ethics in the Age of AI
A key topic of discussion will be the ethical implications of AI for journalism. Article 19 of the new Code of Ethics for Italian Journalists explicitly states that artificial intelligence cannot replace journalistic activity. The code emphasizes that the use of AI must be disclosed and subject to human oversight, reinforcing the importance of the human element in information gathering and reporting.
Beyond Sanctification and Demonization
The discussion aims to move beyond simplistic narratives of either celebrating or condemning AI. Organizers highlight the importance of a mature and balanced relationship between technology and people, avoiding both uncritical acceptance and fear-mongering. The event seeks to address the potential for AI to exacerbate existing inequalities or, conversely, to serve as a tool for promoting fairness and social cohesion.
