Drunk Man Mauled by Lions After Releasing Them From Cages in Mexico

A man in Mexico was seriously injured after releasing six lions from their enclosures at Los Pinos Reserve in San Pedro Cholula, Mexico, on Monday, March 10, 2026. The incident involved an allegedly intoxicated individual who scaled a fence and opened the lions’ cages, leading to a violent attack.

Details of the Incident

According to reports from The Mirror and The Daily Record, the man, estimated to be around 40 years ancient, was found with severe injuries to his arms and face. He reportedly sought refuge in one of the lion cages after releasing the animals.

The man filmed the lions roaring and prowling near the cage he was hiding in. Keepers were alerted and rescued the man, returning the lions to their enclosures. Tragically, a dog at the scene was killed by the lions.

The Reserve and the Animals

Los Pinos Reserve is a sanctuary for former circus animals. The lions involved in the incident were unharmed. The individual responsible for releasing the animals was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Previous Incident at the Reserve

This is not the first time an animal has escaped from a facility in the San Pedro Cholula area. In February 2025, an adult lion was spotted roaming the streets after escaping from the RECICA wild animal shelter, a facility that rescues animals from circuses and captivity, as reported by Mexico News Daily. The lion was safely recaptured without incident.

Investigation and Aftermath

Authorities, including the Federal Environmental Protection Office, the National Guard, and the police, responded to the scene on Monday. The incident is under investigation.
