Italian Banks Enhance ATM Security Amid Rising Robberies

Avellino, Italy – Italian banking institutions are bolstering security measures for ATMs, particularly in the smaller towns of Alta Irpinia, following a surge in robberies. The initiative comes after a meeting convened by Prefect Rossana Riflesso of Avellino, bringing together law enforcement leaders and Marco Iaconis, the national coordinator of the Italian Banking Association’s (ABI) Anti-Crime Security Research Center (Ossif).

Increased Robberies Prompt Action

For months, Alta Irpinia has experienced a growing number of ATM robberies, putting pressure on local communities. Prefect Riflesso emphasized the urgent need for credit institutions to adopt advanced protection tools, extending beyond traditional alarm and video surveillance systems. She specifically called for strengthening safes and physical barriers to limit access to cash, coupled with passive alarm systems. Source: Il Mattino

Advanced Security Measures

A key focus of the enhanced security strategy is the implementation of banknote staining devices. These systems are designed to render stolen cash unusable, acting as a deterrent to criminal activity. Source: Cronache della Campania
