Car Fire Causes Evacuation at Rykkinn Apartment Complex
A car fire in the parking garage of an apartment building in Bjørnebærstien, Rykkinn, Bærum, prompted the evacuation of residents on Friday evening, March 20, 2026. While no injuries were reported, numerous vehicles sustained damage from the blaze and resulting smoke.
Fire Breaks Out in Underground Garage
Emergency services received a report of heavy smoke emanating from the garage at approximately 11:00 PM. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, which originated in a diesel vehicle, but significant smoke permeated the entire garage area.
Extensive Vehicle Damage
Operations manager Rune Hekkelstrand estimated that up to 20 cars were affected by smoke and soot damage, with the potential for the number to increase as a full assessment is conducted. Lars Lindal, duty commander for the 110 central, reported that approximately 45 cars were impacted by the incident due to the close proximity of vehicles in the garage.
Evacuation and Response
Residents were evacuated as a precaution while firefighters worked to ventilate the garage with assistance from the Oslo fire brigade and a large fan. Neighbors Oskar Katula and Kristiane Berg, who live in the building, described feeling anxious and shocked by the event.
Previous Garage Fire
This is not the first time a fire has occurred in the same garage. On October 23, 2022, a fire broke out that damaged 75 cars after three vehicles caught fire.
