An outbreak of a drug-resistant superbug linked to bouncy castles sickened 48 children and teenagers in Ireland, resulting in 15 hospitalizations according to medical findings published in Eurosurveillance. The cluster centers on an outdoor social event held in eastern Ireland during the autumn of 2025, where young attendees spent hours playing on inflatable play structures.

Health investigators identified the pathogen as a strain of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, commonly known as MRSA. According to the published medical report, the specific strain—designated t016-ST22-MRSA-IV—carries a unique pattern of antibiotic resistance, showing resilience against at least four drugs including flucloxacillin, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, and trimethoprim. However, researchers noted that the bacteria remained susceptible to other treatments such as clindamycin, tetracycline, fusidic acid, co-trimoxazole, and linezolid.

Outbreak Scope and Patient Symptoms

The outbreak affected children between the ages of 5 and 16, with a median age of 12 years old, and a higher proportion of cases occurring in boys according to the data. Symptoms appeared rapidly following the gathering, with 34 of the 48 cases developing signs of infection within two days and some showing symptoms in under 24 hours. Patients presented with spots, pustules, redness, blisters, and painful abscesses.

Clinicians documented the infection sites in 27 of the cases, finding that the legs, particularly the thighs, were most frequently affected. Alongside skin lesions, several children experienced systemic symptoms including fever, nausea, or vomiting. Out of the total cases, 33 children received treatment from general practitioners, while 15 required evaluation in a hospital emergency department or day ward. Four patients were formally admitted to the hospital with a median stay of four days, though none required intensive care and no deaths were reported.

Investigation and Environmental Factors

Approximately 120 people attended the autumn social gathering, which featured a barbecue, a gazebo, a candy station, and three inflatable bouncy castles. Epidemiological tracking revealed that 47 of the 48 infected children had attended the event and used the inflatables. The single remaining case did not play on the structures but had very close contact with an infected child shortly afterward.

Researchers determined that many youngsters spent extended periods on the inflatables, with 19 of the attendees reporting at least four hours of play. Investigators noted that the weather on the day of the event was warm, humid, and intermittently rainy, leaving many children noticeably wet. Parents described the activity inside the castles as crowded and physical, involving rough-and-tumble play that likely caused superficial scrapes and abrasions, providing an entry point for the bacteria.

Public Health Response

Health officials concluded that the bouncy castles served as the primary vehicle for transmission during the gathering, marking the first known instance of an MRSA outbreak linked to inflatable play structures. Rather than swabbing the bouncy castle surfaces—which officials deemed impractical due to the time elapsed and the difficulty of confirming viability—health authorities contacted the equipment owners and recommended a thorough decontamination process.
