Valdis Zatlers on Aging, Attitude, and Finding Joy in Simple Pursuits

Former Latvian President Valdis Zatlers shared insights on aging, maintaining a positive outlook, and the importance of finding joy in everyday life during an interview with IEVA magazine. His perspective centers on the idea that attitude plays a crucial role in experiencing a fulfilling life, regardless of age.

A Shift in Perspective on Age and Health

Zatlers recounted a common experience from his time as a doctor, noting that patients around the age of 75 often appeared healthy and were sometimes advised to delay medical procedures. He explained his reasoning, stating he focused on maximizing the quality of life for his patients until its natural conclusion. He would emphasize that delaying intervention whereas relatively young allowed individuals to continue enjoying their lives, while acknowledging that the risks associated with surgery increased with age – particularly after 80.

The Power of Mindset

The former president believes that age is not solely a matter of years but also a state of mind. He observed that some individuals appear “old” at 25, losing their interest in life and ability to find enjoyment. Zatlers firmly believes that a positive attitude can make life easier and more rewarding, emphasizing that “living is cool.”

Finding Joy in Simple Pleasures: Gardening as an Example

Zatlers highlighted the importance of finding joy in simple activities, using his own passion for gardening as an example. He noted that his gardening season begins on his birthday in March and continues until mid-October. He jokingly attributed his dedication to a desire for efficiency – wanting to minimize future work by preparing everything meticulously, allowing him to enjoy the process more fully.
