Army West Point Women’s Rugby Opens 7s Season with Strong Performances

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Army West Point women’s rugby team launched its 7s season with a series of matches on Saturday at Brown University, showcasing a strong performance from both its Gold and Black squads.

Army Black Dominates Early Contests

The Army Black team began the day with a decisive 22-5 victory over Northeastern University. Grace Macune opened the scoring with the first try of the game, followed by a successful conversion from Alyssa Eisenhart. The Black Knights continued to build their lead with tries from Taimane Fiatoa and another from Macune, extending the score to 17-0. Ellie Kearney added the final try of the match.

Army Black continued its winning streak with a 33-0 shutout against Brown University’s second team. Yesenia Morales scored the opening try, setting the tone for a dominant performance.

The team secured another shutout, defeating AIC 21-0. Fiatoa and Morales each contributed a try, with Eisenhart successfully converting both attempts.

The Black team faced a tough challenge in the championship game of the round robin format, ultimately falling to Brown University’s top team 29-17.

Army Gold Secures Victories

The Army Gold team kicked off its competition with a commanding 37-0 win over the Coast Guard Academy. Molly Kennedy opened the scoring, paving the way for a 20-0 lead at halftime. Zoe Weimer, Marissa Wollbrinck, and Gwen Gilchrist added tries in the second half to seal the victory.

Army Gold continued its success with a 36-0 defeat of St. Bonaventure University. Bekah Shepkosky scored the first try, followed by contributions from Kennedy, Leila Galarza (with two tries), and Addison Bowman.

Facing Brown’s top squad, Army Gold suffered a 43-0 loss.

The Black Knights concluded their Saturday with a 17-5 win over AIC in the 3rd place match. Bowman, Elene Andrade, and Kennedy each scored a try, giving the Gold team a 17-0 lead at halftime. Army conceded only five points in the second half, securing the win.
