Rassie Erasmus Urges Springboks to Take Risks in Series Finale Against All Blacks

South Africa and New Zealand collide in a high-stakes rugby test series finale on Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland, with Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus urging his backline to take calculated risks to secure a 3-1 series victory.

Springboks Evolution and Tactical Shifts Under Tony Brown

South Africa enters the Baltimore finale following an expansive performance in Johannesburg last Saturday, where they defeated New Zealand 29-24.

Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus credited the shift to the hard work of attack coach Tony Brown, who joined the staff following the initial loss to the All Blacks. Erasmus told reporters on Monday that the team wants to diversify its scoring methods rather than relying exclusively on traditional set-piece dominance, such as pushover scrums and lineout mauls.

“Tony has worked really hard since the loss in the first test,” Erasmus said, as reported by the AP. “We don’t just want to score maul tries or scrum tries, we also want to use other opportunities so we’ve been working hard at that.”

Erasmus noted that his side may have placed too much initial emphasis on containing New Zealand’s attack during the first test at Ellis Park rather than executing their own attacking game plan. While acknowledging the extreme difficulty of containing the All Blacks, Erasmus emphasized that winning ultimately comes down to outscoring the opposition.

Team Selections and Injury Updates for Baltimore

Erasmus named a largely settled lineup for Saturday’s clash, making just two changes to the 23-player matchday squad that triumphed in Johannesburg. Morné van den Berg earns his first start of the series at scrumhalf, replacing Cobus Reinach, who drops to the reserves after Van den Berg provided a significant impact off the bench.

The Springboks forward pack remains unchanged following strong performances in the second and third tests. Erasmus also addressed flyhalf selection, opting to retain Manie Libbok as an impact substitute rather than shifting Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu from fullback, noting that Feinberg-Mngomezulu is still regaining full rhythm following ankle surgery in May.

Meanwhile, New Zealand faces a severely depleted squad ahead of their team announcement on Thursday.
