Android 17: A Deep Dive into Google’s Next-Generation OS
Google’s Android 17 is rapidly taking shape, with the public beta phase now underway. The release, slated for a stable launch in June 2026, promises significant updates to privacy, security, and user experience. While Google has moved away from dessert-themed codenames for public branding, internal teams continue to use them – with Android 17 internally known as “Cinnamon Bun.”
Key Features and Changes in Android 17
Bubbles for All Applications
Android 17 expands the functionality of bubbles beyond conversation notifications. Users can now run applications in floating windows, enhancing multitasking capabilities without fully leaving the current app. On larger screen devices, a dedicated bubble bar in the taskbar provides quick access to settings and switching between bubbles.
Enhanced Contact Picker Security
Privacy is a key focus in Android 17, with a revamped Contact Picker system. Apps will now receive temporary access to selected contacts only, and must re-request permissions after each session. This limits data access and strengthens user control over personal information.
Seamless Task Continuity (Handoff API)
A long-awaited feature, task continuity allows users to seamlessly continue apps, files, or notifications across connected Android devices. Utilizing the Handoff API, Android will suggest nearby devices for simple synchronization, streamlining the user experience across the Android ecosystem.
Redesigned Privacy Indicator
The privacy indicator receives a visual overhaul, replacing the previous green pill design with a distinct, separate circle in a different color. Location access is now indicated with blue circles, providing clearer visibility into which apps are accessing sensitive data.
EyeDropper API for Developers
Android 17 introduces the EyeDropper API, enabling apps to select specific pixel colors without requiring sensitive screen-capture permissions. This simplifies development processes and reduces application file sizes.
Strengthened SMS & OTP Protection
One-Time Passcodes (OTPs) receive enhanced security measures. Access for non-recipient apps is delayed by three hours, mitigating the risk of data misuse for SMS, WebOTP, and standard SMS messages.
Adaptive App Support for Large Screens
Android 17 requires apps to adapt their orientation and size to large-screen devices. Users retain the option to customize default behavior through aspect ratio settings.
Advanced Media Support: VVC & Loudness Management
The update introduces support for the Versatile Video Coding (VVC/H.266) video format, enabling higher quality video with smaller file sizes. The CTA-2075 API allows applications to dynamically adjust audio levels for a more consistent listening experience.
