Czech Football Rocked by Corruption Scandal Ahead of Euro Playoff
Prague – Czech football is in turmoil as a widespread corruption scandal has erupted, leading to the arrests of dozens of individuals connected to the sport. The investigation, initiated by the Football Association of the Czech Republic (FAČR), centers on allegations of match-fixing and betting-related corruption across multiple leagues and levels of play, just days before a crucial Euro playoff match against Greece.
FAČR Initiates Police Intervention
The FAČR confirmed that it proactively initiated the police intervention, cooperating with law enforcement authorities for an extended period to uncover unfair practices. David Trunda, President of the FAČR, emphasized that the investigation does not currently implicate anyone within the association’s management. “The Football Association of the Czech Republic is the initiator in this case. We have been cooperating with law enforcement authorities from the beginning,” Trunda stated at a press conference. “I will do everything to ensure that the betting mafia disappears from the Czech environment. There is no place for it in our sport.”
Scope of the Investigation
The investigation, which involved Europol and Interpol, has been ongoing for three years and encompasses individuals from the Czech First League, lower divisions, and youth competitions. According to reports, those arrested include players, referees, and club officials. The National Organized Crime Agency (NCOZ) confirmed that criminal proceedings are underway, focusing on suspicions of corruption and fraudulent behavior related to sports betting. “Criminal proceedings are taking place in several places in the Czech Republic and abroad, and several dozen people were detained during them,” said Radim Dragoun, chief prosecutor in Olomouc.
Disciplinary Proceedings Initiated
In addition to the police investigation, the FAČR Ethics Commission has initiated 47 disciplinary proceedings. These proceedings involve referees Jan Petřík, Jan Všetečka, Miroslav Zelinka, Simon Vejtas, and former referee Pavel Býma, as well as several players and club officials. Clubs under investigation include MFK Karviná, SFC Opava, 1. SC Znojmo, TJ START Brno, FC Zlínsko, and FC Vratimov. Specifically, Karviná is accused of violating disciplinary rules by allegedly offering bribes to referees to influence match outcomes.
Key Individuals Involved
Several individuals are facing scrutiny. Jan Wolf, chairman of the board of MFK Karviná and mayor of Karviná, is under investigation, along with players Samuel Šigut and Matěj Hýble from Karviná. Martin Latka, deputy chairman of the Opava board and co-owner of the club, is also implicated. Allegations include attempts to bribe referees to influence matches, with reported sums reaching 200,000 crowns.
Government Response
Boris Šťastný, the Czech Minister for Sports, Health and Prevention, stated he is closely monitoring the situation and fully supports the cooperation between law enforcement agencies, the FAČR, and UEFA’s anti-match-fixing unit. “The influence of sports competitions in connection with bets is the bane of sport, and the uncompromising fight against match-fixing must be supported as much as possible,” Šťastný wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Impact on Euro Playoff
The timing of the investigation is particularly sensitive, occurring just days before the Czech Republic’s crucial Euro playoff match against Greece. Trunda acknowledged the unfortunate timing, stating, “Unfortunately, we could not influence the timing… The whole thing took a long time, on the order of years.” The FAČR and UEFA are working to ensure the integrity of the playoff match is maintained.
FAČR’s Commitment to Reform
Trunda, who assumed the presidency last May, has emphasized his commitment to revitalizing and reforming Czech football. “I ran with the aim of revitalizing and reforming Czech football. We have zero tolerance for these activities,” he added. The FAČR is cooperating with UEFA and has appreciated the approach of the Czech association.
