FA Chair Demands FIFA Release World Cup Sell-Off Documents Over Balogun Ban Controversy

Football Association Demands Internal FIFA Records

The Football Association (FA) has demanded that FIFA release all internal documents concerning a controversial World Cup disciplinary reversal, according to reporting by the BBC.

The standoff centers on the overturned suspension of 25-year-old forward Balogun during the tournament. Balogun was shown a straight red card for a foul on defender Tarik Muharemovic during a 2-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the last 32, which ordinarily would have triggered a one-match ban. Instead, FIFA ruled that the automatic suspension would be suspended for a year, allowing the striker to play against Belgium in the last 16. FIFA cited a rule permitting punishment suspensions but provided no further reasoning, according to the BBC.

Trump Call Triggers Disciplinary Reversal

The disciplinary reversal sparked friction among international football bodies after US President Donald Trump confirmed he called Infantino to ask for Balogun’s ban to be reviewed, as reported by the BBC.

Confederations Fracture Over Tournament Proposals

The sequence of events fractured relationships within global football administration. Following a proposal revealed through the media shortly after the World Cup final, UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation issued an open letter accusing FIFA and Infantino of breaking trust “through deception,” according to RTE.ie and the BBC.

National Associations Drop Re-Election Support

In response to the growing unrest, national associations including England, Wales, and Scotland withdrew their letters of support for Infantino’s re-election bid. However, Infantino retains backing from other regions, with the confederations of Africa, South America, and Oceania reiterating their support, according to the BBC.

Rabat Meeting Sets Up Council Confrontation

Following the cancellation of the disputed proposals, Infantino convened a meeting of the FIFA management board in Rabat, Morocco. Yet, no direct consultation had occurred with the FIFA Council to explain the plan prior to scheduled governance reviews, according to the BBC.

FA leadership, alongside other national representatives, intends to press for answers when Infantino faces Hewitt and the other 35 FIFA Council members during upcoming sessions, as reported by the BBC. The FA seeks full transparency regarding the documentation behind Balogun’s overturned ban and broader governance practices under Infantino’s administration.
