Beloved British Cartoon ‘Mr. Benn’ to Receive Live-Action Film Adaptation
A live-action film adaptation of the classic British children’s television series Mr. Benn is in development, with Kirk Jones, director of I Swear, set to helm the project. The announcement, made on March 24, 2026, marks a significant step toward bringing the iconic character to a new generation.
A Nostalgic Journey Back to Festive Road
Mr. Benn, created by David McKee, first appeared on the BBC in 1971. The series followed the adventures of a bowler-hatted gentleman who, through a magical fancy dress shop, embarked on extraordinary journeys to different worlds. Despite only 13 episodes being originally aired before ending in 1972, with a single episode revival in 2005 on Nick Jr., the show cultivated a devoted following over half a century.
Kirk Jones to Direct, Production Slated for 2027
According to a press release from 48 Films, BeaglePug Ltd, Jackpot Productions, and One Story High, casting for the lead role and supporting characters is expected to commence later in 2026, with filming planned for 2027. Jones, who previously directed Nanny McPhee and Waking Ned, expressed his personal connection to the project.
“I adored Mr. Benn as a child and immediately saw the importance of introducing him to a new generation, in a live action adventure,” Jones stated. “Mr. Benn finds a unique way to travel through time and space, visiting historical and futuristic worlds to solve apparently monumental problems, with kindness, compassion and common sense. Following on from I Swear, I am keen to operate on a project that is humorous and entertaining, whilst at the same time, in a world full of distractions, helps focus on what is important. If all goes to plan, Mr. Benn might even save the world.”
A Family Legacy and Enduring Appeal
The family of David McKee, who passed away in 2022, shared their enthusiasm for the project. “The Mr Benn film project has been close to our hearts for many years, it was something our father would often talk about, he was keen to notice it happen. It has picked up momentum over time and the pieces have gradually come together. We’re absolutely thrilled to now have Kirk Jones on board to help guide it in the right direction and we are really excited about going back to Festive Road, where we grew up.”
Mr. Benn’s timeless appeal stems from its fable-like quality and the character’s design, which was inspired by silent film stars Charlie Chaplin and Laurel & Hardy. The series, at its core, explores themes of escaping routine and embracing adventure.
