The Shifting Landscape of AI Data Centers: Beyond the GPU Boom

For the past three years, the conversation surrounding data centers has been dominated by GPUs. From training clusters to inference racks and accelerator roadmaps, GPUs have been the central focus of innovation and investment. However, a subtle but significant shift is underway, signaling a potential evolution in the architecture of AI-powered infrastructure.

The Reign of the GPU: A 2024-2025 Snapshot

In 2024, GPUs accounted for a staggering 82% of the total revenue generated by AI chips . This dominance continued into 2025, with GPU deployments set to increase exponentially. NVIDIA has been the clear leader, introducing its Blackwell GPUs in 2024 and rapidly scaling deployments throughout 2025. As of May 2025, major hyperscalers were reportedly deploying nearly 1,000 NVL72 racks – totaling 72,000 Blackwell GPUs – each week, with estimates exceeding 2.5 million Blackwell GPUs (GB200) shipped in 2025 .

However, AMD is emerging as a significant contender with its MI300 and MI350 series GPUs, securing major shipment deals for large-scale GPU clusters. AMD has secured a multibillion-dollar collaboration with Humane to build AI infrastructure powered by AMD CPUs, GPUs, and software, and a deal with Oracle for up to 130,000 MI355X GPUs .

The Growing Demand and the US Data Center Build-Out

Data center construction is experiencing a surge, driven by the escalating demand for AI capabilities. Private spending on U.S. Data center construction increased by almost 80 percent in 2025 compared to 2023 . Server chips, particularly GPUs, represent the largest component of modern data center capital expenditures, accounting for at least 45% of total investment .

Supply Chain Realities and the Reliance on Taiwan

Despite the design of these chips originating in the U.S., their production and packaging are overwhelmingly concentrated in Taiwan. While Nvidia’s Blackwell wafers were in full production at TSMC’s Arizona Fab 21 as of October 2025 , the U.S. Will remain reliant on Taiwan for advanced packaging with high bandwidth memory until planned facilities open in the United States – a timeline projected for 2028 at the earliest . Currently, silicon manufactured in Arizona must be shipped to Taiwan for final packaging.

To navigate potential tariffs, U.S. And Taiwanese firms are exploring options under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which treats servers and GPUs shipped from Mexico to the United States as “originating goods,” regardless of their initial country of origin. Nvidia has expanded its server assembly footprint in Mexico to take advantage of this exception .

Beyond GPUs: The Role of Other Chip Technologies

While GPUs currently dominate, the AI chip landscape includes advanced CPUs, ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits), and emerging AI chip technologies. The demand for accelerated computing chips within AI data centers – often referred to as “AI Factories” – is driving investment and innovation across the entire spectrum of AI silicon .

Optimizing Data Center Efficiency with Advanced Interconnects

Cisco recently announced its Silicon One G300, advanced systems, and optics designed to power and scale AI data centers . This technology aims to make data centers more profitable by increasing the number of tokens generated per GPU-hour.

The future of AI data centers will likely involve a more diversified approach, leveraging the strengths of various chip architectures and optimizing interconnectivity to maximize performance and efficiency.
