Calgary Students Receive Payouts in John Ware School Abuse Case
An Alberta judge has approved payouts totaling millions of dollars to more than 50 former students of John Ware Junior High School in Calgary, who alleged abuse by two former teachers. The settlements, accepted by Calgary Court of King’s Bench Justice Michele Hollins on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, bring a measure of closure to a case spanning decades.
Settlement Details
The payouts range from $24,000 to a maximum of $422,000, with 12 complainants receiving the highest amount. Other complainants will receive $322,000, $222,000, $122,000, $72,000, $47,000, or $24,000, depending on the extent and severity of the abuse suffered. The $422,000 payouts are to be distributed by May 17, 2026.
Background of the Case
The lawsuit named the Calgary Board of Education and teachers at John Ware School, alleging sexual, physical and psychological abuse that occurred between 1988 and 2004. Michael Gregory, a teacher at the school for 20 years, was charged in 2021 with 17 counts of sexual assault and sexual exploitation. However, Gregory died shortly after the charges were laid, and his death was not considered criminal.
Additional Perpetrator
Fred Archer, another former teacher at John Ware School in the 1990s, was previously convicted of abusing boys at a different school.
Financial Contributions and Apology
The settlement includes $15.8 million from the Calgary Board of Education and a smaller, undisclosed amount from Gregory’s estate. The Calgary Board of Education has issued an apology for the harm experienced by the class members and commended their courage in coming forward. The settlement also provides opportunities for victims to collaborate with the division on policies and training.
Legal Representation
David Corrigan, the lawyer representing the students, stated that his clients are pleased the lengthy legal process has concluded. Justice Hollins also expressed appreciation for the cooperation and organization demonstrated throughout the legal proceedings.
