USABC Calls for Stronger US-ASEAN Alliance Amid Supply Chain Concerns
Washington D.C. – The U.S.-ASEAN Business Council (USABC) is advocating for a strengthened alliance between the United States and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to address growing vulnerabilities in global supply chains. The call to action came during the launch of the USABC Action Plan supporting the Philippines’ 2026 Chairmanship of ASEAN, highlighting concerns over disruptions in food, fuel, and logistics.
Supply Chain Resilience as a Key Priority
According to a report by Manila Standard on April 30, 2026, USABC interim President and CEO Brian McFeeters emphasized the need for increased cooperation between the public and private sectors to bolster resilience against supply chain disruptions. McFeeters proposed an ASEAN High-Level Dialogue on Sustainable and Secure Supply Chains, aiming to facilitate the sharing of best practices and innovative solutions.
“Let’s try to develop a cooperation between businesses, and we represent some U.S. Businesses that are major players in the logistics area,” McFeeters stated. “They would bring their best ideas on how to improve the security of the supply chain. It includes things like trying to cut down on illicit trade, right, due to the fact that illicit trade costs both governments and companies money.”
Strategic Action Plan and Philippine Chairmanship
The USABC’s strategic action plan, developed in collaboration with the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC), aims to support the Philippines’ priorities as ASEAN Chair in 2026. Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, delivered pre-recorded remarks at the launch, underscoring the importance of public-private collaboration in achieving regional economic goals. ASEAN highlighted the collaborative effort between USABC and ASEAN-BAC.
The Philippine News Agency reported on April 30, 2026, that the action plan was presented to Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque, signifying the Philippine government’s commitment to working with the USABC and ASEAN-BAC.
Focus on Sustainable Logistics and Electric Vehicles
The USABC’s proposal specifically focuses on promoting the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in logistics as a means of enhancing sustainability and reducing reliance on traditional fuels. This initiative aligns with the dialogue’s broader focus on sustainable logistics practices and mitigating the impact of energy shocks and rising logistics costs.
Private Sector Collaboration and Fuel Policy
Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) Chairman Emeritus George Barcelon expressed optimism that the private sector would actively collaborate with the government to review the moratorium on fuel-based power generation. This collaboration is seen as crucial for ensuring a stable and diversified energy supply for the Philippines and the broader ASEAN region.
Looking Ahead
The USABC’s call for a stronger US-ASEAN alliance and its proposed action plan signal a growing recognition of the importance of regional cooperation in addressing complex global challenges. As the Philippines assumes the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026, the implementation of this strategic plan will be critical in fostering economic growth, enhancing supply chain resilience, and promoting sustainable development across Southeast Asia.
