Johanna Samuels Announces New Album Sorry, Kid and Shares New Single “Circles”
Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Johanna Samuels has officially announced her third studio album, Sorry, Kid. The upcoming record follows her 2023 release, Bystander, and is scheduled for release on August 14 via Odd Man Out Recordings and Jealous Butcher.
To coincide with the announcement, Samuels has shared the album’s third single, “Circles,” which features Tyler Ballgame. The track is accompanied by a music video directed by Sydney Morin.
Reflecting on “Circles”
Samuels describes “Circles” as a song that originated during her time living in New York City when she was 20 years old. She notes that the writing process was heavily influenced by her interest in the music of Elliott Smith and the concept of the infinity symbol, specifically referencing the Schoolhouse Rock number “Figure 8.”
“I was reflecting heavily about how we can all feel so much and numb out at the same time, how we can make beautiful music and gather in community and also have war and violence. I hoped (and still do) that there is an underlying kindness and a goodness at the bottom of it all. that love and honesty win ” Samuels stated regarding the song’s themes.
She further explained that the song explores the idea that individuals function as “tiny little universes of self experience,” and that the “Eureka!” moments we encounter often mirror the axis of a figure eight—a circle turning upon itself, allowing for continuous learning and growth.
Production and Collaborations
Sorry, Kid was recorded to tape with producer Jonathan Rado of Foxygen, with additional production provided by Patrick Damphier. The album features a diverse range of guest contributors, including Courtney Marie Andrews, Madison Cunningham, Erin Rae, and Jordan Lehning. Notably, the tracklist includes a song titled “Blue Vs. Pinkerton.”
